TRAFFIC TIP

Traveling from or through the Birmingham area?

If you are traveling from the Birmingham area and the first leg of your route allows you to take either I-20/59 or I-459, your travel time most likely will be shorter for morning or afternoon games if you use I-20/59 and travel through the Bessemer area toward Tuscaloosa.  Our observation during the previous games is that the volume of traffic on I-459 has continued to increase each game and sometimes backs up at the I-459/I-20/59 interchange.  Thus, the congestion going to Tuscaloosa has been less on I-20/59 than on I-459.

Click here for I-20/59 vs. I-459 Map

As an update to the above tip, ALDOT has made great improvements to the I-459 S I-20/59 W interchange.  In the past, the on-ramp from I-459 S onto I-20/59 W has gone from two lanes to one lane.  Through the support of ALDOT, this interchange has been updated to include two lanes throughout the merge onto I-20/59 W. Now, there is no need to merge into the left lanes immediately as the left lane becomes one of the main I-20/59 W lanes and the far right lane extends all the way down to exit 104.  This will be especially helpful for morning and afternoon game traffic that had previously backed up on I-459 up to five miles.

EXPANDED CORE CAMPUS ROADBLOCKS

Fan safety is our number one priority on gamedays.  In order to safely accommodate the extra 10,000 fans in and around core campus streets, we are moving some of the roadblocks along University Blvd. and Bryant Drive three hours prior to kickoff.

Gameday Routes and Parking Zones
